Matthew and Evianne’s Cambridge wedding at Clare College
Growing up I always wanted to go to Cambridge University. But my academic career didn’t exactly work out as planned, I was a terrible student and I didn’t end up going to any university at all in fact. But now – after Matt and Evi’s wedding at Clare College – I can finally say I went to Cambridge! Only for a day, and not for academic reasons, but still pretty cool I think!
I had been to Cambridge to meet Evianne and Matt a good few months earlier and they showed me round a bit while we did some pre-wedding portraits around a place that means so much to them both. I commented that it felt like we were on a movie set, something out of Harry Potter as people wandered around in gowns and on bikes or carrying stacks of books. They took me all the way into Clare College where they were getting married and I gazed up at the incredible architecture of Clare College and Kings College behind. I found it all so impressive.
Matt and Evianne’s story is one of an Australian boy and Dutch girl, meeting at an iconic British university and falling in love although not really realising it until they ended up in The Hague together one Christmas, with everyone in Evianne’s family realising that they were a couple but somehow Matt and Evianne not realising it themselves. A very cute story. I remember what struck me about these two when we first spoke on Skype and when I first met them at their home in Cambridge was how much they openly adored each other. That made it a joy for me to photograph them on their pre-wedding shoot and at their wedding at Clare College.
Their wedding in Cambridge was such a beautiful day – the sun shone all day long, as punters punted up and down the river Cam. One of my favourite moments was just after their ceremony, as their guests congregated ready to greet them with bubbles, I followed them down the path by the river. As people spotted the bride and groom, they cheered and shouted messages of congratulations as Evianne raised her bouquet in celebration and delight. It’s the sort of moment that I know they will remember forever.
After a quintessentially British drinks reception in the Scholars Garden they enjoyed dinner in the Great Hall and dancing in the cellar. All this happening in the place they had met and where their love had blossomed and grown, how special. And even more special as they would soon leave Britain for Matt’s native Australia to begin married life.
Such a pleasure to be part of your day Matt and Evianne – congratulations and all the best for what I know will be a life of adventures together. You can also see the film of Matt and Evianne’s Clare College Cambridge wedding shot by my great friends at Reel Weddings.
