Jue and Mike’s inspirational wedding in Cheshire
I get inspired every week by the people I meet doing this so-called job, but few weddings inspire me as profoundly as Jue and Mike’s. See, this was their second time planning their wedding after cancelling their first due to a life-changing injury suffered by Jue, which eventually resulted in her losing half her left arm. She had emailed me a couple of months before the wedding to tell me about all this, and the fact that she was scrapping plans to wear a prosthetic arm at the wedding which was a massive emotional step for her and something she knew would make Mike surprised and proud.
Truthfully, it made no difference to me how many arms Jue had… I could tell from our first skype how much they love each other, and that they both had wicked senses of humour and I knew it would be a brilliant day and a pleasure to be part of. I also knew just how important photography was to them given the perspective and outlook on life that the injury had given them both. And the pressure was on too with Mike being a Creative Director by trade!
When I arrived at Rookery Hall on the morning of the wedding there was a definite nervous atmosphere in the bridal suite where Jue was having her make-up done. But she welcomed me as if she’d known me for years, and so did Mike when I headed across the hotel to get a few photos of him getting suited up. I always get nervous on the morning of a wedding but those nerves disappear when I’m made to feel as welcome as Jue and Mike made me feel.
This was a day of celebrating life, love, family and friends. It was sort of an unspoken theme that everyone was so relieved that Jue had come through a couple of years of epic struggle and was still in their lives, and she left everyone there in no doubt how much she loved them all and appreciated their support and presence in her life – not least of course her rock Mike, who she absolutely adores and he idolises her in return. They truly are such an inspirational couple. A reminder of how fragile life can be but more so a reminder of how you can use devastation as inspiration in life. The photo above is one of my favourite photos of this wedding, where I was able to use an ‘angel’ print on the wall of the bridal suite to frame Jue while she was having her dress fastened – because there was definitely a feeling that Jue had her own guardian angel, but also that she had become one for those around her with her positivity and love.
Jue, Mike – you guys are awesome and I wish you all the love and happiness for the future.
